The Edge of Reality
by J. Allen Hynek and Jacques Vallee
Henry Regency Co., 1975, Chicago, 301 pages

This book is subtitled "A Progress Report on Unidentified Flying Objects" and is the only book jointly written by Hynek and Vallee, two of the most respected names in ufology. Much of the book is actually a dialogue and discussion between Hynek and Vallee. One of the many good points brought out in the book is that the scientific community has never properly studied the subject; too often the phenomenon has been ignored or ridiculed by narrow-minded scientists. Scientists like to study physical things in the lab and UFOs which never seem to stay long enough anywhere to study seem to defy physical analysis. There are some excellent photos in the book of UFOs which are believed to be authentic.

Very often UFO experts are called "believers". As Hynek and Vallee point out, this is not appropriate. On page 220 they state "You don't have to believe in electrons to study electronics and you can observe a phenomenon and study it and apply analytic technique to it without a strong emotional commitment to a particular theory of it". We study the phenomenon of UFOs, we have no desire to believe or not to believe in them although some people do.
